The 21st century, according to The Guardian, will be defined by the issue of migration. Fueled by labour shortages and economic growth, industries such as agriculture, construction and health care continue to expand the need for migrant workers.
Canada’s facilitation of migrant workers dates back to the 1960s and remittances contribute significantly to the GDP of countries such as the Philippines, Mexico, and India. Having large groups move across countries to live and work brings with it significant challenges to both the host societies and the migrant workers who live in fear of deportation and who may not have the same access to government protection measures. Concerns about low wages and substandard working conditions have been raised by various nongovernmental organizations, researchers, and journalists. Lara White of the International Organization of Migration will talk about the work of her organization in helping governments, the private sector, and other intergovernmental or civil society stakeholders to better safeguard the rights of migrant workers throughout the labour migration process, including the promotion of ethical labour recruitment practices.
Lara White is the Senior Labour Migration Specialist for the Labour Mobility and Human Development (LHD) division of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), based in Geneva, where she provides technical and policy guidance related to temporary and permanent labour migration. She also acts as the division’s primary liaison with the private sector and other governmental, intergovernmental or civil society stakeholders on the protection of migrant workers’ rights throughout the labour migration process, including the promotion of ethical labour recruitment practices.
