More than a decade after the historic inter-Korean summit meeting in June 2000, inter-Korean relations are still characterized by mutual distrust, animosity, and conflicting ideologies. The unpredictable security situation on the peninsula undermines any effort at reconciliation, as well as poses a serious threat to international security. This presentation will assess the prospects for dialogue and argue that a peace process involving China and the United States, and aiming to replace the 1953 Korean War armistice with a Korean peninsula peace agreement, is the only means to achieve the peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula.
