We are pleased to announce that Potentia, the graduate student journal of the University of Ottawa’s Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS), is accepting submissions for our 2024 edition.

This year’s journal will follow an open theme, allowing for the exploration of a wide array of topics related to international affairs. You are free to submit your paper on your choice of topic. Our editorial team is particularly interested in submissions relevant to international affairs in all interdisciplinary perspectives and various areas of focus for this edition, including but not limited to conflict and climate change governance, labour migration and citizenship, the rise of new regionalism, and the rise of the global alt-right and conservative movements.

We are seeking submissions that critically engage contemporary issues in international affairs, with consideration particularly for pieces that make use of creatively adapted theoretical frameworks. Given the journal’s interdisciplinary nature, we are seeking submissions from a wide array of disciplines, including but not limited to international relations, political science, criminology, economics, history, law, sociology, business, global public policy, and gender studies.

Submissions will be assessed based on originality, depth, and relevance.

Both master’s and doctoral level students are encouraged to submit manuscripts in either French or English. Early submissions are encouraged.

Guidelines for submissions:

Potentia welcomes five types of submissions:

  • Research articles (should not exceed 8,000 words in length, including in-text citations and the reference list);
  • Book reviews (800 to 1,000 words) of work published in 2022, 2023, and 2024;
  • Policy briefs (should not exceed 1,500 words);
